Bullington Manor
Bullington
Manor has been one of the stars of the Fishing Breaks portfolio from the
very start, nearly twenty years at the time of writing.
Flowing for four miles this is one of the most exclusive and private
of all the beats in the Test valley, having been in the same family since
the mid-1920’s.
The fishing has been a favourite for many angling greats over the years;
F W Halford fished here for some years prior to taking the lease at Mottisfont
Abbey as the guest of the owner, Henry Nicoll.
An obsessive fisherman, Nicoll published many articles and letters, but
most famously wrote the introduction to Rev. Richard Durnford’s
classic Fishing Diary, in which Bullington is often mentioned.
The fishing itself is classic chalkstream with different hatches for
every month and a massive Mayfly hatch that lasts from early May to early
June. The river is immacutely maintained by Fishing Breaks river keepers,
with as large a population of self-sustaining wild brown trout as will
be found on any Test beat.
The fishing is divided into four beats, passing through a variety of
lightly wooded valleys and open water meadows. There are hatch pools,
weirs, fast races and glides – in fact, a complete variety of fishing
to suit most styles and aspirations.
Taking its flow from headwaters, the water is always crystal clear, with
a bright gravel river base and ranunculus beds, which makes it
the ideal spot for stalking and sight fishing.
Every beat has good car parking and a Fishing Cabin at the water’s
edge. The Cabins are fully equipped with water, stove, crockery, cutlery
and fresh coffee.
