Weekly River & Hatches Update
August fly fishing calls for adapting to summer conditions. There is scarcely a time when it is quite impossible to catch a good trout. The countryside continues to bloom, and the banks of well-fished rivers are somewhat less crowded. Be prepared to stay late to catch the evening rise!
Weather:
The weather is set to warm up again this week, with average temperatures between 22 and 27 degrees. Again, lots of sunny intervals and the occasional shower. Sunrise: 05:28 GMT. Sunset 20:56. GMT. UV: Moderate, Pollen: Moderate, Pollution: Low. Pressure: 1019mb, Steady.
River Flows:
The river flows are still ranging from between low to normal as rated by the Environment Agency. Feedback suggests they continue to fish well despite the somewhat challenging conditions. Be sure to handle fish with extreme care amid the heat.
Hatches:
Olives, sedges and midges are the three main hatches for August. The Blue Winged Olive is a particular favourite – with its three stages of emerger, dun and spinner.
Fly Patterns:
Mixed fly patterns reported again in the past week. Klinkhammers continue to be a popular choice, as well as the delicate Iron Blue. When nothing is moving on the surface, observe the fly life and match with the nymph – whether it be a classic Hare’s Ear or a Gold Headed Pheasant Tail.
Our Seasonal tips:
During sunny spells, be mindful of your shadows and stealthy in your approach to avoid spooking fish. This might mean crawling on your hands and knees and hiding behind reeds! If a fish comes up for a fly but turns away this is one of the few times of the year that you should consider reducing the thickness of the tippet rather than changing the fly. Always apply mud and sinkant every time you retie a fly.
