Ilsington Fishing Lodge - River Frome
The Fishing Lodge at Ilsington was completed in 2016, one of the most remarkable buildings of its kind to be built in recent times. This is truly a getaway-from-it-all, set in the beautiful chalkstream water meadows, miles from the nearest habitation. The single storey building is wrapped around the panoramic living area, with amazing views over which you will rarely see another living soul. The lodge features a large living room, dining area, kitchen, rod room and three en-suite bedrooms. One double and two twins. The centrepiece of the living area is a log burning stove and glass doors that open on to the outside deck. There is excellent Wi-Fi. Dogs are welcome. |
The 3 & 7 night stays include fishing for up to six Rods. There is a huge variety of wild brown trout fishing to explore, both on the main River Frome and carriers running to nearly 5 miles, with the option to fish from the bank or wade. There is also every chance of a salmon or sea trout so bring that extra box of wet flies, plus Ilsington also holds the current British grayling record.
Dorchester is our market town with plenty of dining choices though you will be hard pressed to do better that our local The Wise Men Inn.
|
|
In addition to the fishing and the lodge there is a wealth of things to do, see and visit. The water meadows are an amazing bird watching paradise, it is just 6.5 miles as the crow flies to the Jurassic Coast and do try to grab a bite at The Crab Café on Chesil Beach.

Kingfisher Lodge - River Avon
After a sabbatical year to allow the extensive river restoration of 2021 to bed-in, Kingfisher Lodge is back. This sleek, modern lodge with a view over the river is ideal for a couple or small group. The village of Coombe is more of a sleepy hamlet, but in the next door village of Enford ¾ mile away there is a great local pub and within two miles the Michelin starred Red Lion Inn. Both Salisbury, with its historic cathedral and the lovely market town of Marlborough are within 20 minutes’ drive and there are spectacular walks over Salisbury Plain right on your doorstep, plus of course, Stonehenge just up the road. |

Lock Keepers' Cottage - River Itchen
The paint was barely dry on Lock Keeper’s Cottage as we welcomed our first visitors in 2022 and it has been a hit ever since. Extensively renovated and extended from what was originally a 2 up/2 down cottage for the lock keeper (when the Itchen Navigation was navigable up to Winchester) into a sumptuous house. The word cottage does not really do justice to this spacious home (2,250 ft2) which is ideal for a family or house party, with four bedrooms, three bathrooms (two en-suite), a big kitchen, living spaces and orangery which opens onto gardens and the river. |
The weekend and weekly rentals include two days of fishing for two Rods at any one time with the option to
add more fishing if you wish at Qing Ya Xi or elsewhere. Dogs are welcome (max. two) as are children of
10 years or older. The maximum party size is seven, including children. There is an artificial grass tennis
court which is available for use at the discretion of the owners.
The Lock Keeper’s Cottage is close to Southampton, the New Forest and the cathedral cities of Salisbury, Winchester and the coast is just 15 miles.

Hemsworth Huts - River Allen
It is hard to find a more peaceful, rural get-away-from-it all idyll than the Hemsworth Huts. Set amidst a 1,000 acre organic estate these unique shepherds huts are on the edge of unspoilt water meadows, circling a small lake and stream with the River Allen a short walk across the meadows. The fishing is an all wading and all wild 775yds/710m beat where you will catch perfectly speckled brownies and gorgeous grayling. This is the sort of fishing where you will use your shortest, lightest outfit and delight in the freedom of summer wet wading.
|
There are two huts that sit on the edge of a woodland clearing. Hemsworth One is the primary shepherd hut which has a double bed, kitchenette with running water, gas cooker, electricity and log burner. There is a WC and a separate shower. Hemsworth Two is a smaller version of One with a single bed which makes up into a small double and again has electricity, log burner, running water and WC.
Outside there is seating and a firepit.
Hemsworth One. The 2 night weekend or 3 night midweek rental includes unlimited fishing on the River Allen from 3pm on day of arrival to dusk on day of departure. No wi-fi and limited 3G signal. Dogs welcome. Maximum party of two, including children.
Hemsworth One & Two. The 2 night weekend or 3 night midweek rental includes unlimited fishing on the River Allen from 3pm on day of arrival to dusk on day of departure. No wi-fi and limited 3G signal. Dogs welcome. Hemsworth Two is best for one adult or shared by two young children.
Notes: If you book Hemsworth One Hemsworth Two will be left vacant to give you exclusive use. Though you have unlimited fishing we recommend that you fish no more than two Rods at any one time to reduce the pressure on the fish. This is an all catch and release water.

Deans Court Fish Camp - River Allen
Wake. Fish. Sleep. That is the mantra for Fish Camp! Enjoy two days of dawn to dusk fishing with an overnight stay. You are welcome to bring your own tent or stay in the Fishing Shack in the meadow beside the river which has bunk beds, hot shower, flush WC, kitchenette, veranda and BBQ. With a mixture of bank and wading fishing, this is an all wild fish beat for brown trout and grayling. This is small stream fishing for a combination of sight fishing and speculative casting to likely holding spots and runs. There is a spectacular Mayfly hatch in May and June. This beat is ideal for two friends.

Croisy-sur-Andelle - River Andelle
Combining the delights of chalkstream fishing English style with the Gallic lifestyle was a pleasure pioneered by Charles Hamer, who married into the Pol Roger champagne family and immortalised his life work in his book Chalk & Cheese. Sadly, Charles and his wife have passed on but the family home and fishing on the River Andelle, have been retained by his daughters Celia and Sophie. Located in northeast Normandy the Andelle, one of just 15 French chalkstreams, is an easy two hour drive from the Channel Tunnel at Calais or a similar drive from the ferry ports of Caen, Cherbourg and Le Havre. The house, an old-fashioned French-style farmhouse on the edge of Croisy village, has five bedrooms (three doubles, one twin and a four bed bunk room), three bathrooms (one en-suite), entrance hall, sitting room, kitchen/diner and rod room plus secure parking and a large fenced garden. Dogs and children are welcome.
|
The fishing consists of two beats on the Andelle. The longer House beat of 680 yards starts at the edge the garden and the Road beat of 190 yards is a ten minute walk across the water meadows. There is also the tiny tributary La’Héronchelle which is worth the occasional exploration.
The fishing is predominately dry fly in May and June – prime Mayfly time is mid-June, with a mixture of nymph and dry fly later in the season. The fish are brown trout, all wild and all catch and release. Fish from the bank or wade if you wish. There is no limit on the number of Rods but 2-3 at any one time would be sensible. The season runs March 9 - September 15.
THINGS TO DO & PLACES TO VISIT
The nearest village is Ry, a charming and picturesque Norman village that owes its fame to Flaubert's novel Madame Bovary. A walk around the village invites literary reverie around the places where the characters of the novel would have lived. There is a colourful market every Saturday which is well worth a visit.
The house is a 30 minute drive from the Normandy capital - Rouen. Famed for its Cathedral, much painted by Monet, Rouen is a fascinating city with a cobblestoned pedestrian centre and medieval half-timbered houses, with the occasional 21st century embellishment by Banksy! There is a thriving shopping scene, both clothes and antiques, and excellent bars and restaurants.
Paris is a two hour drive, or easily accessible by train from Rouen. A great sightseeing day trip or overnight stay.
Deauville and Honfleur are an hour and half away and offer the delights of a seaside town together with racing, grand casinos, golf courses and a flourishing restaurant scene. A great pit spot en route to the D Day landings.
Closer to Croisy there are a number of extraordinary gardens to visit including Monet's garden, Giverny (1 hour), Le Jardin Plume (15 mins) and le Jardin d'Angelique (15 mins).
Not forgetting the architecturally and historically important nearby villages of Lyons La Foret (15 mins) which has a Michelin starred restaurant, and Gerberoy (35 mins), both voted one of the most "beautiful villages in France".
