Fishing in Cumbria

Fishing Breaks offers a range of opportunities to fish for a variety of species in Cumbria including trout, salmon, sea trout, perch and pike with guide Eric Hope.

The region is famous for the Lake District where the fishing is, naturally on lakes, for wild brown trout, monster pike, the occasional char, huge perch with salmon, sea trout and trout on the River Derwent.

In these spectacular surroundings Eric and his team are both guides and instructors, with children as young as 7 years welcome.

Derwentwater, Windermere & River Derwent with Eric Hope

A variety of fish species in spectacular surroundings

Fishing advice and flies

The season runs from April - September during which time Eric majors in an array of exciting, guided experiences. Whether its fly fishing for the wild brown trout, salmon and sea trout on the River Derwent, via boat for pike and perch on Derwentwater and Lake Windermere, or tuition to cover all basics. All the specialist tackle, equipment and flies required are provided at no extra cost and waders are not required. Just bring some sturdy footwear, warm clothes, and good waterproofs.

Salmon, Sea Trout & Trout

North Cumbria is famous for the quality of its game angling and the River Derwent is the preeminent sea trout and salmon river of the region. Brown trout are fished for from April to September and salmon and sea trout run in large numbers from July onwards. Throughout these full-day fly fishing adventures, you will cover all the nuances of double-handed casting; spey casts, snake rolls and the snap ‘T’ to name a few.

Perch & Pike

In the main, you will fly fish from a boat on Derwentwater for perch, with the option to use baits and lures if you wish. These days can be particularly prolific, and Eric frequently enjoys days that bring as many as fifty fish or more to the boat, with the chance of meeting some very sizeable perch indeed. Three pounders show up most summers! Derwentwater is also the primary venue for pike on the fly where you can expect plenty of fish weighing in the region of fifteen to twenty pounds.

Tuition

If you are a novice, or you need a refresher, this is the perfect opportunity to brush up on the basics and draw from the wealth of experience and knowledge that Eric freely offers. These are full day guided tuitions, hosted on the beautiful Cumbrian Derwent where you will cover everything from tackling up, to fly selection targeting the wild brown trout, dace and chub on these upland freestone rivers.
