DERWENTWATER, WINDERMERE & RIVER DERWENT
‘Derwent’ derives from the Celtic expression, ‘river with oak trees,’ and the River Derwent is no exception to the rule.
The Cumbrian Derwent rises up near Scafell , then runs into Derwentwater before being joined by the Greta in Keswick. Beyond there it flows through Bassenthwaite Lake and down to the sea at Workington.
Derwentwater, immediately south of Keswick, is the third largest lake by area in the Lake District, after Windermere and Ullswater. It is nearly 3 miles long and over 1 mile wide. Its primary inflow and outflow is the River Derwent. A brilliant fishing venue though it may be, its attraction to many is for its scenic value and its wooded fells are criss-crossed with footpaths and bridleways for the enjoyment of all.
