RIVER EDEN & TEES
The River Eden rises on the high ground of the Yorkshire Dales. It runs the course of the Cumbria and North Yorkshire border at quite a gradient as the Hell Gill Beck, before turning north at its confluence with Ais Gill Beck, and dropping into Hell Gill Force, the highest waterfall along its seaward journey. Thereafter, the river flows through Kirkby Stephen and Appleby-in-Westmorland, fed by becks of the Pennines and the Lake District. Later, near Carlisle, Hadrian's Wall crosses the Eden which continues to join the sea at the Solway Firth, a total of 81 miles.
The Tees rises in the North Pennines and flows eastwards on an 85 mile journey to the North Sea. The river descends quickly in a series of falls and rapids before cascading over the 21 metre High Force waterfall at Cauldron Snout. From here, less of a torrent, the river continues to meander south-easterly, calming slightly on its approach to the Low Force waterfall at 5.5 metres. In its lower reaches, it forms the border between County Durham and North Yorkshire.
